Throughout human history, mankind has been compelled to express what they experience in the natural world through unlimited forms of artistic expression. From early expressions using simple available materials to today’s computer enhanced imagery, technological evolution continues to expand the tools available to artists of all genres. These advances are readily embraced and employed by artists as new means to expand their creative expression.
Digital Art is an emerging art form where traditional painting techniques, using mediums such as pastel, oil or watercolour, are “virtually” applied using a computer, instead of pigments, brushes and canvas. This is not computer generated art, where the computer creates the artwork through automated algorithms; but rather, computer assisted expression of the ideas, concepts and vision that the artist desires to portray.
At Still Life Photo Works, the artwork is created using photographs that provide the “sketch” and colour palette to base the artwork on. Digital brushes are used to apply “paint” to a blank “canvas”, using specialized painting software and a pen and tablet device. Through this approach, the realism captured in photography can be transformed to become an interpretive expression of art that closely resembles traditional painting in oil or watercolour. The art is not limited to viewing on a computer screen, but truly comes to life when printed on canvas or art paper, and framed.
